The Moto G5 will be officially released in Canada on May 3, the Canadian branch of Motorola Mobility confirmed on Wednesday. The device will be retailed by all major mobile service providers in the country, including Bell, Virgin Mobile, Videotron, and SaskTel. Consumers will be able to purchase the device for $250 CAD without a contract, the Lenovo-owned company said. The Moto G5 was initially unveiled at Mobile World Congress (MWC) earlier this year alongside the Moto G5 Plus, but it’s currently unclear whether its larger and more expensive sibling will eventually be making its way to Canada as well. Even if the Moto G5 Plus is planned for a launch in Canada, that release will certainly be scheduled after May 3.
Regarding the Moto G5, Canadian consumers will be able to purchase the two base models of the device that only differ in terms of internal storage space as they offer 16GB and 32GB of storage, respectively. Other specs of the device include a 5-inch LCD display panel with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels, a 13-megapixel rear camera, and a 5-megapixel front shooter. The Moto G5 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 430 system-on-chip (SoC) and 2GB of RAM, in addition to featuring a 2,800mAh battery that’s relatively sizeable considering the modest screen real estate of the device. Coupled with a conservative SoC, the device should be able to last through the day on a single charge without any issues. In an unlikely case that it doesn’t, you can always just replace its battery with a spare one as the rear plate of the Moto G5 isn’t sealed. The handset also sports a regular fingerprint sensor and a microSD card slot that supports up to 128GB of extra storage. Finally, the smartphone is running Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box and is expected to be updated to newer builds of Google’s open source operating system in the future.
Motorola Mobility previously confirmed that the Canadian variants of the Moto G5 won’t ship with an NFC adapter, though the reasoning for that decision has yet to be clarified. In any case, an update on the availability of the Moto G5 in Canada will follow in the coming weeks.
