Moto’s last hurrah for the well-loved design conventions of the original Moto X lineup, the Moto X Pure, looks to finally be getting its update to Android 7.0 Nougat. The issue is that the update is apparently only hitting a small amount of users, leading some to believe that the update is actually part of a soak test, a very limited rollout meant to allow a select group of users to beta test the update one last time before it rolls out to all users. The update brings Google’s vision for Nougat and all that entails, but not much else in this case.
The users who are getting the update are reporting that there are no issues thus far. The update brings users up to Android version 7.0, rather than the newest 7.1.2. Even so, that brings a large number of benefits, such as improvements to Doze, better accessibility and security features, and native split screen multitasking. Reports thus far are saying that the Moto apps that are already present are staying in place with this update, but no new ones have been added, and there have been no major updates to them or problems with them after the update. Moto’s official changelog from their website the site echoes this. The changelog lists off all of the benefits of Android 7.0 Nougat over Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but doesn’t seem to mention any unique touches specific to the Moto X Pure.
This update, since it contains a full Android version update, is quite large, and should be applied with caution. The usual caveats apply; either have your phone on a charger or have the battery above 80%, and make sure not to power it off during the update. Since this update seems to be on a limited run, actually getting it to pop up as available on your device is the difficult part. Some users have suggested taking your SIM card out to check for the update over Wi-Fi. You could also try rebooting your device. It should go without saying, of course, that if you have your phone rooted or are on a custom ROM, the update notification and subsequent OTA will likely not appear at all.
