An update is currently being rolled out to the Nest application and brings with it a whole host of new features. These include changes to notification settings and the addition of a catalogue-style section which displays compatible Nest partner products and devices, as well as added support for Google Smart Lock. The Nest automation app controls the Nest range of connected smart home products, which aim to protect your home and keep it safe from threats such as intruders or fire. The range includes indoor and outdoor security cameras, smoke detectors, and their first product, programmable thermostats. As well as using your smartphone to control a number of devices in your home, Nest uses your phone’s location as well as sensors and algorithms to automatically perform certain actions such as switch off the central heating and switch on security cameras when you leave the house.
The biggest change that users will notice is the addition of support for Google Smart Lock. This enables users to conveniently sign into Nest with the device that they already have registered with Google to authenticate themselves and removes the need to remember separate log-in details. Users of the Nest Cam, the home camera security system, will also notice that notification system in the app has been overhauled and improved with this update. The new features allow each family member to have their own profile, with full control over their notifications and receive them to their smartphone, tablet or Android Wear watch. They can also change individual settings. The notifications which alert users when a camera detects a person or movement was originally complicated to set up and has also been improved and simplified with this update. Users must have a Nest Aware Subscription, which costs $10 per month to take advantage of these additional features.
Nest Labs was originally created by ex-Apple employees Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers in 2010. It was bought by Google’s parent company, Alphabet for $3.2 billion in 2014, and continues to develop many internet-enabled smart home products. The update to the app, which is version 5.1.1.0.30, is being rolled out at this time and is available through the Google Play Store.
