The Samsung Galaxy S7 is beginning to get its update to Android Nougat, just a few days after the Galaxy S7 Edge got its update. To be clear, this is for the SM-G930U, which is the carrier-unlocked Galaxy S7 that Samsung and Best Buy were selling. It comes later than all of the carrier variants (likely due to the fact that the carrier variants were more popular). The update is a pretty big one, coming in at 1226.7MB in size. That’s a pretty large update, but not too surprising for an Android platform update, going from Marshmallow to Nougat is a big update.
With this update, the Galaxy S7 gains plenty of new features, including enhanced Doze mode, which is going to give users even better standby time, seeing as the Galaxy S7 will be able to drop down into Doze mode a lot quicker than on Marshmallow. Additionally, you are getting plenty of under-the-hood updates on the Galaxy S7 with Nougat. This will make things a tadbit faster, smoother and better on battery life. Unfortunately a lot of the new features in Nougat are cosmetic, and with the Galaxy S7 having Samsung’s own skin on-top, most users aren’t going to see these changes. Samsung did note that there are some changes and bug fixes included in this update. Which include some cosmetic changes to the quick settings in the notification panel.
The update is available now to all unlocked Galaxy S7’s in the US. You can head into Settings, tap on About Phone then search for system updates, it should begin pulling this one down. You’ll want to make sure that you are on WiFi before attempting to download it, as it is a pretty big one. Additionally, you’ll want to make sure you have at least 50% battery left before installing. As these updates can take some time, and you don’t want your smartphone to die while you are updating your Galaxy S7 to Nougat. Those with the Galaxy S7 Edge in the US, you should already have your update waiting for you, if you haven’t installed it already.
