The Light Phone is a handset designed to prevent its owners from getting distracted by the Internet or SMS but still remain reachable, and the device just became available for pre-orders. The main selling point of this simple cell phone is that it can only be used for calling, its creators claim. The Light Phone does not support SMS, email, or internet connectivity, and consequently makes users spend time free from distractions. To further prevent the users from dealing with possible nuisances, owners do not need to bring their smartphones and tether the Light Phone using Bluetooth for it to function. Instead, the device can communicate with a 2G network using a conventional SIM card.
The build of the phone somewhat reflects the minimalistic nature of the device. The Light Phone only has a numeric keypad for its input and a small monochromatic display to display time and the number of the person being contacted. The phone is charged using a microUSB port, and a nano-SIM card slot is available for those who decide to not use the SIM card that comes with the device. The Light Phone’s manufacturer promises standby times of up to four days and talk times ranging from 45 to 90 minutes. The Light Phones comes in matte white and matte black variants.
Those interested in acquiring the Light Phone should either pay for a monthly service that costs $5 a month or buy a 2G nano SIM card to insert into the device. For those who decide to use the included SIM, a desktop app is available to set up the Light Phone. Following the initial setup procedure speed dial contacts will be added to the desktop application. Upon verifying their phone number, owners should save the two GoLight numbers that the manufacturer will provide them with. Those numbers will be used to activate or deactivate call forwarding from your smartphone to your Light Phone. Unfortunately, the call forwarding feature is not available to international buyers of the device as the subscription SIM service offered to customers is currently exclusive to the United States, but speed dial registration and software updates can still be performed using the desktop app. For those interested in acquiring the device, the phone is available for purchase through the manufacturer’s official website but new orders will only be shipped late this month due to the high demand for the device.
