The United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Monday certified two variants of a Motorola Mobility-made device bearing the model number XT1791, one of which features two SIM card slots. The testing documentation published by the federal agency was uncommonly comprehensive and revealed several details about the device that don’t correspond to any handset that the Lenovo-owned company announced to date. The most telling detail about the handset is that it’s powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 system-on-chip (SoC) and features a 3,000mAh battery, in addition to sporting a single-lens rear camera setup consisting of a module manufactured by Sunny Optical Technology for the dual SIM variant and Q Technology for the single SIM model.
Given the aforementioned specs and the recently leaked lineup of Moto devices scheduled to be released by the end of the year, the XT1791 might be the Moto G5S or Moto G5S Plus that the Lenovo-owned smartphone maker is expected to announce in the coming months. The same piece of silicon is powering the recently released Moto G5 that’s also available in a dual SIM variant and is equipped with a slightly smaller 2,800mAh battery. Finally, the testing documentation reveals that the smartphone supports Bluetooth 4.2, though that detail isn’t particularly telling. Regardless, the SoC powering the device indicates that the XT1791 will sport LPDDR3 RAM and feature a Full HD display panel, as that’s the maximum resolution supported by the Adreno 505 GPU that’s integrated into the Snapdragon 430.
Given how it’s currently unclear whether the Moto G5S and Moto G5S Plus will be slightly upgraded or downgraded variants of the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus, the XT1791 could be either, though the former scenario may be more likely. As the device has now been certified by the FCC, it will likely be released in the U.S. at some point in the future. The newly revealed specifications of the smartphone suggest that it will compete in the lower mid-range segment of the market and will be priced at below $300. More details on the XT1791 and other upcoming Moto-branded handsets are expected to be available later this year.
