Chicago, Illinois-based food delivery service Grubhub is bringing its popular online platform to TripAdvisor, the two companies announced on Monday. As a result of the new partnership, Grubhub’s takeout features are available to all users of the popular mobile traveling app from today, regardless of whether they’re accessing TripAdvisor through a mobile or desktop browser, or the Needham, Massachusetts-based company’s mobile app for Android and iOS, the firms revealed. Given how Grubhub is a U.S. company, TripAdvisor’s support for its service will be limited to customers in the United States for the time being, though it’s currently unclear whether the fruits of this partnership will automatically expand to other countries if and when Grubhub does.
In practice, TripAdvisor’s users traveling throughout the United States will now be able to order food from one of Grubhub’s partner restaurants in a more seamless manner. The food delivery service currently boasts “tens of thousands” of partners located in around 1,100 cities throughout the country, meaning that approximately every third city in the United States has at least one restaurant that’s a part of the company’s online takeout ecosystem. The functionality itself will be available in the restaurant section of the TripAdvisor app that already provides users with an extensive list of restaurants and their contact information. While TripAdvisor will presumably receive a cut of profits generated by Grubhub-enabled orders made through its online service, the exact terms of the deal are unknown and won’t be disclosed in the future, the companies said. Likewise, neither party revealed how long their partnership will last, though the wording of the official announcement on the matter suggests that the collaboration is meant to be a long-term one.
For the time being, it seems that customers looking to take advantage of TripAdvisor’s Grubhub support will still need to have the latter’s mobile app installed on their mobile devices. In case they don’t, tapping the “Order Online” button in the TripAdvisor app will simply bring them to Grubhub’s mobile website. It remains to be seen whether TripAdvisor and Grubhub will be looking to further intertwine their services in the future, but more details on the matter might be available later this year.
