The OnePlus 5 will launch this summer, the Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer confirmed in a statement provided to The Verge on Friday. The company revealed no other details on the upcoming device that’s been the subject of numerous rumors for a few months now but is apparently still some time away from being unveiled. According to previous reports, the follow-up to the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T won’t be called the OnePlus 4 due to a number of reasons, including the fact that the number four is considered to be unlucky in the Far Eastern country. Furthermore, as the company itself revealed, some of its employees are fans of Robert Horry, former NBA player that used to wear the number five jersey while playing for the Los Angeles Lakers in the late ’90s and early naughties. In fact, the company’s headquarters in Shenzhen, Guangdong, allegedly contain two paintings of the 46-year-old retired basketball player.
Some other rumors pertaining to the OnePlus 5 indicate that the upcoming device will be powered by the Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip (SoC), Qualcomm’s first 10nm piece of silicon ever created. Furthermore, the handset is said to feature at least 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, though it remains to be seen whether the Chinese tech giants opts to offer several models of the smartphone with different RAM and storage configurations. Previous rumors suggested that the OnePlus 5 will be powered by a 3,600mAh battery that likely won’t be removable but will be able to charge 25-percent faster than the battery featured inside the OnePlus 3T. Finally, the device is said to ship with a dual camera setup consisting of two sensors placed next to one another, coupled with a conventional LED flash. The OnePlus 5 will almost certainly run some newer build of Android Nougat out of the box that will be enhanced with the company’s proprietary OxygenOS interface.
While OnePlus didn’t clarify on whether its upcoming flagship will ship in early summer or later, industry sources previously claimed that the device is scheduled to be launched as soon as June, meaning that more information on the thereof might surface soon.
