Dual cameras have been a hot topic this year, and especially when rumors emerged claiming the Galaxy S8, and/or the Galaxy S8 Plus, was likely to come sporting such a setup. After all, the Snapdragon 835 and Exynos 8895 both support dual cameras. However, following the lack of dual cameras on the two Galaxy S8s, the natural expectation was that the the Galaxy Note 8 will be the first Samsung smartphone to sport a dual camera setup. Although, if a reliable tipster is now to be believed, then it seems “the first dual camera Samsung smartphone is not Note 8.” Which if correct, leads to two lines of thinking. The first being that there will be no dual camera setup on the Galaxy Note 8. The second being that another dual camera smartphone will launch from Samsung before the Galaxy Note 8 – a possible candidate could be the Galaxy X, Samsung’s expected foldable device.
What is clear is though, is that Samsung has filed several patents in South Korea concerning a dual camera and that the rumored foldable phone, the Galaxy X, is expected to launch before the Galaxy Note 8. If the Galaxy X comes with dual cameras, then it stands to reason that there is still every chance that the Galaxy Note 8 will also boast the feature. So it does seem inevitable that Samsung will start using dual cameras at some point. With the real question being which device Samsung will pick as its first dual camera smartphone. In some respects it does make sense for the Galaxy Note 8 to be a dual camera smartphone – as it will help to further differentiate the Galaxy Note 8 from the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. Although, chances are that Samsung would then carry this over into the Galaxy S9, with some possible refinements.
Most high-end smartphones can do a relatively good job of manipulating photos with their software, but a true dual camera setup does have certain advantages over software. For instance, there are times when a wide-angle shot is needed to get more people in a photo or even when you want to take a landscape shot. You can also get a much better bokeh effect with dual cameras, while the less you have to use software to manipulate an image, the less noise you will likely see in the finished image.
