After being announced at CES 2017, the Samsung Chromebook Pro is finally available for purchase today. The Chromebook Pro is the more powerful of the two Chromebooks the company announced in January. The Chromebook Plus runs on an ARM chip (a Rockchip to be exact), but other than that, the Chromebook Pro is the same. Speaking of processors, the Chromebook Pro sports the Intel Core M3 Processor, and that is paired with 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM. Unfortunately the RAM is not upgradeable. Luckily, with Chrome OS, 4GB of RAM is plenty for getting everything done. For storage, there’s 32GB of flash (eMMC) storage available. And finally, there’s a 12.3-inch 2400×1600 resolution display. It gets bright up to 400 nits, and it also sports a 3:2 aspect ratio.
The Chromebook Pro is indeed a convertible, since it does have a touchscreen, you can use it in tent mode, or as a tablet if you wish to do so. With it having a somewhat different, 3:2 aspect ratio, it makes it easier to browse the web. Samsung has also included a stylus, which makes it easier to take notes, draw in different apps and even navigate through the US. There’s a silo on the right-hand side where the stylus will live when it’s not in use. The Chromebook Pro does have Android app support, but it is still in beta. It’s been a bit of a rocky start for Android apps on Chrome OS, and it still isn’t as stable as most people would like, but it is available. You’ll just need to switch your Chrome OS channel to “beta” and you’ll have Google Play Store access.
Samsung is launching the Chromebook Pro on Amazon and its own online store right now. It’ll likely come to other retailers in the very near future though. The Chromebook Pro comes with a price of $549, which is $100 more than the Chromebook Plus. The Chromebook Pro only comes in black, which is not the color they originally showed the Chromebook Pro off in, at CES 2017.
