Along with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus, Samsung also announced DeX, which is their attempt at making your smartphone double as your laptop. It’s a pretty small dock that allows you to plug in a monitor, mouse and keyboard and use your Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8 Plus on the big screen. In the US, it’s priced at $149 and currently on sale (and has been since April 21st, when the two smartphones launched). Now it has appeared in Canada at The Source, and it’s priced at $249 CAD. This much higher price is due to the weak Canadian dollar right now, so the higher price was expected.
The listing on The Source notes that it is available online only (i.e. not in their physical stores) and it is also sold out. According to Mobile Syrup, who reached out to Samsung for a comment on this, both the Gear 360 and DeX are going to be making their way to Canada in 2017, however they don’t have any further information on timing or pricing. Much like other products when they launch in Canada, it’s quite possible that Samsung may launch these two products later on in the summer. Months after the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus launch.
Samsung DeX has received some pretty mixed reviews, with people making jokes about carrying a monitor around so they can plug in their smartphone and use it. Samsung has made it easier than other companies in the past, like HP, and Motorola. But there still aren’t many apps supported, and then there’s the whole thing of buying a $150 (in the US at least) accessory to even get started with this. This may turn out to just be an experiment for Samsung, and we may not see it evolve with the Galaxy Note 8 or Galaxy S9 later this year or next year, but it’ll be interesting to see how many people pick up the Samsung DeX and actually use it with their Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8 Plus.
