Samsung has finally launched their DeX dock for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus in Canada. It’s a bit more than it is in the US, coming in at $249, but otherwise, it’s the same as what they are selling in the US and elsewhere. It does not come with a monitor, mouse or keyboard, so you will need to provide those yourself. DeX was shown off with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus at Unpacked back in March, but so far it has been a popular product.
With DeX, users will be able to dock their Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8 Plus, and essentially turn it into a full-fledged desktop. The DeX dock has ports for ethernet, HDMI, USB and USB-C, so you can plug everything in here – and even have a wired internet connection. Samsung says that users will be able to just sit down at their desk and dock their Galaxy S8 and get to work. There are many apps already supported by DeX and the Galaxy S8, and Samsung is planning to add more apps to that list. It works just as you’d expect, and actually works pretty well. But the setup isn’t exactly “mobile”, since you do need a monitor, mouse and keyboard to get started.
This isn’t the first time that a company has attempted to make your smartphone a desktop computer, but it is the latest attempt, and perhaps the greatest. There’s been things like Motorola’s Lapdock, and Microsoft Continuum, which was actually pretty compelling since it worked with Windows Phone and essentially turned the phone into a Windows desktop. But with Windows Phone not really taking off, neither did Continuum, unfortunately. Samsung DeX is available from their website, coming in at $249. Unfortunately, Samsung is not offering any type of promotion for those buying the Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8 Plus, to get them to pick up the DeX dock as well.
