Samsung announced the Gear 360 at its Unpacked event back in March, along with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. This is Samsung’s second-generation of the 360-degree camera, and it’s finally available in the US. As of today, it’s available at Amazon, B&H Photo, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon and US Cellular. It’s also relatively affordable, coming in at just $230, full retail price. Of course, if you pick up the Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8 Plus, you can get it for just $49. It works well with the Galaxy S8 and the Gear VR. As you’ll be able to immerse yourself in the content shot on the Gear 360 in the Gear VR.
The Gear 360 is much smaller than its predecessor, and the reasoning behind this is to make it easier to hold onto, and even easier to pocket. The original Gear 360 was basically just a sphere, which looked odd when it was in someone’s pocket, it was also fairly large. But it did offer better photo and video quality. This Gear 360 can shoot in 4K, which is definitely needed for 360-degree video in this day and age. Samsung made it easier for users to just pull out the Gear 360 and start recording as well. The Gear 360 app is still available (and needed), but the overall experience is much better than with last year’s Gear 360.
It’s important to note that there is no on-board storage here with the Gear 360, so you will need to pick up a micro SD card for storing photos and video on the Gear 360. Luckily, Samsung has a slew of great micro SD cards available. It’s also worth noting that the Gear 360 is only available with some Samsung devices, and not all Android devices nor iPhones. It is compatible with the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8 Plus and the Galaxy A5 (2017) as long as they are running Android 5.0 or later. You can pick up the Gear 360 right now from Amazon, B&H Photo, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon and US Cellular right now.
