A possible Xiaomi Mi Max 2 launch date of May 23 is the subject of a new rumor. The upcoming phablet has been rumored about for a while now, and while earlier rumors said that it would be unveiled alongside the Xiaomi Mi 6, that hadn’t happened. The latest information not only suggests that the Mi Max 2 will be officially launched next Tuesday but also that the launch event will be announced tomorrow. While unconfirmed, the rumor is seemingly in line with Xiaomi’s previous practices of announcing new devices without much prior notice.
The Mi Max 2 will be a successor to Xiaomi’s Mi Max that released in May last year with a massive 6.44-inch display. The original Mi Max is no longer listed on Xiaomi’s Mi Mall, which also reinforces the idea that a new device will be launched shortly. Pricing-related leaks pertaining to the device claimed that its price will range from between 1,499 yuan ($217) to 1,999 yuan ($290). Previously leaked specifications of the Mi Max 2 suggest that the smartphone will boast a 6.44-inch display panel with Full HD resolution and be fueled by a 5,000mAh battery featuring support for some fast charging technology.
The Chinese phone maker is expected to announce two variants of the Mi Max 2, one with the Snapdragon 626 and 4GB of RAM, and another equipped with the Snapdragon 660 processor and 6GB of RAM. Other leaks have suggested a 12-megapixel rear camera with Sony IMX378 sensor rather than a 16-megapixel unit that was featured on the original Mi Max. However, some sources suggested that the Mi Max 2’s rear camera will have a larger aperture for higher quality images and the device might also sport a 5-megapixel front-facing snapper. There have been contradictions though, with some leaks saying that the Mi Max 2 will be running Xiaomi’s MIUI 8 based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat while others indicated that the phone will ship with MIUI 9. However, the likelihood of the device coming with MIUI 9 out of the box is slim, given that this version is still in beta. Regardless, more details about the Mi Max 2 will likely be available in the immediate future, possibly even come next week.
