Just in time for Mother’s Day, Google has unveiled a new Google Photos tool called “Mother’s Day Movies” designed to allow users to quickly create a video tribute to moms all over the world. Users from select territories have until May 14 to prepare a nice gift for their mothers and for those who are a little behind on their preparations, Google’s new tool might prove to be very helpful.
Google’s newly introduced tool will create a short clip by stitching together pictures of a mother and her children, so in order for a process to be a straightforward one, it’s recommended to use plenty of images. At first, Google Photos will perform a quick photo library scan and reveal a list of faces it recognizes. Users are then required to pick the faces that are to be featured in the video clip, Google says. The system does not appear to discriminate between male and female faces, so users can virtually pick any face to play the “mom” role. Google claims Photos will automatically choose the best photos of mother and her children while also applying a musical background to the video. After a few minutes of processing, the Mother’s Day movie appears within the Assistant tab. There are some limitations to what the tool can provide. For instance, unlike Facebook’s friendship anniversary videos, users won’t be able to manually choose the images that are to be featured in the video nor edit the video after it has been created.
In an ideal scenario, Google Photos can help you create a timeline of your life alongside mom, from infancy to adulthood. However, that would require actually having an extensive family photo selection at your disposal, but between changing phones or accidentally deleting files, most people will probably be limited to using relatively recent images. Still, the feature could prove useful for people who heavily rely on Google Photos to store memories. If a short video clip doesn’t seem like much of a gift, there are plenty of other alternatives for tech enthusiasts. For example, French wearable maker Withings is selling a limited edition of the Steel HR for Mother’s Day.
