Motorola Mobility on Thursday officially announced the Moto Z2 Play, its latest Android-powered smartphone that’s set to succeed the 2016 Moto Z Play. The newly unveiled device is meant to compete in the upper mid-range segment of the market, hoping to differentiate from its competitors thanks to its support for Moto Mods and a number of other features.
The Moto Z2 Play boasts a 5.5-inch AMOLED display panel with a Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution and is extremely thin, measuring only 5.99mm in thickness. The Lenovo-owned company managed to achieve this slim design by slightly downgrading the battery compared to last year’s model as the new device now boasts a 3,000mAh non-removable unit. The company will be offering two variants of the device sporting 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage and 4GB of RAM and 64GB of flash memory, respectively, both of which will feature a microSD card slot. The Moto Z2 Play is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 626 system-on-chip (SoC) with eight cores clocked at a maximum frequency of 2.2GHz. This particular piece of silicon is said to be conservative enough to compensate for the smaller battery of the Moto Z2 Play, though it remains to be seen how the device will hold up in everyday use. The handset is equipped with a 12-megapixel rear camera with an aperture of f/1.7, as well as a 5-megapixel front-facing sensor boasting a slightly narrower aperture of f/2.2. Both the front and the back camera setup sports a standard LED flash unit. Motorola says that the device is covered with a water-repellent coating and will be available in Lunar Gray, Fine Gold, and Nimbus Blue, with the more expensive variant sporting a $499 price tag. The Moto Z2 Play is scheduled to launch in the United States this summer where it will be sold unlocked directly by Motorola, in addition to being carried by Verizon Wireless.
Apart from the Moto Z2 Play, the company also debuted four new Moto Mods for its Z-series devices – the Moto GamePad, Moto TurboPower Pack, JBL SoundBoost 2, and the Moto Style Shell with Wireless Charging, the latter of which is priced at $39.99, while the rest will be sold for $79.99 per unit. All of the newly announced Moto Mods are also set to be released this summer and more details on their availability are expected to follow shortly.
