Sony is finally ready to enter the mobile gaming scene and the company recently revealed that its first title for the mobile market will be an Everybody’s Golf game. For the moment the title seems to be planned for an exclusive release in Japan where it will be available on the Android and iOS platforms. The game will be free to download, however, it will be supported by in-app micro-transactions.
Sony’s Everybody’s Golf series is just over one month away from its 20th anniversary, having debuted on the original PlayStation in July 1997. For the most part, the series existed on the PlayStation platform with multiple titles being launched on various Sony consoles, including the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation 3. The final game to be released was Everybody’s Golf 6 on the PlayStation 3 and Vita, and for the past few years, the company has been working on a sequel for the PlayStation 4, which is now set to be released in August of 2017. Having said that, Sony is also planning on bringing a new Everybody’s Golf game to the mobile platform for the first time, and whether or not coincidental, it appears that Sony may plan on launching both a mobile game and a console version for the PlayStation 4 within the same rough time frame. Whatever the case may be, Everybody’s Golf for mobile will apparently be launched in Japan first where it will enjoy some form of exclusivity. Reportedly the company has decided to launch the game in Japan first as the market performance of its PlayStation 4 console isn’t as positive as it is in the western hemisphere. Instead, it would seem that the mobile gaming scene is growing in Japan and this prompted Sony to take action and join the segment following Nintendo’s foray last year with the release of Miitomo.
At the time of writing little is known about Sony’s plans for Everybody’s Golf outside of Japan; however it’s interesting to note that Sony intends on bringing a few other PlayStation titles to the mobile scene. Having said that, if golf isn’t your cup of tea then you may want to look forward to these other upcoming releases confirmed by Sony, including Wild Arms, Arc the Lad, and Disgaea.
