Amazon on Wednesday announced the Kindle Oasis, its first waterproof e-reader that’s also its largest and clearest to date, boasting a 7-inch screen displaying 300 pixels per inch. The IPX8 rating ensures that the Kindle Oasis can survive being submerged in up to 2 meters (6.56 feet) of static water for a maximum of two hours, with the product also boasting Bluetooth-enabled Audible playback support so that consumers are able to listen to audiobooks in addition to reading e-books.
Just like it was the case with many other Kindle-series devices, the e-reader that’s now set to mark the lineup’s tenth anniversary is a device that isn’t meant to be versatile, with Amazon designing it solely for the purpose of consuming (audio) books. That product strategy still doesn’t mean the Kindle Oasis is a low-priced offering seeing how it features a premium build and can even allow for cellular connectivity if you’re willing to pay extra. The most affordable variant of the Kindle Oasis that’s of the Wi-Fi-only variety and features 8GB of internal flash memory is priced at $249.99, with the addition of “free” mobile data to the mix and 24GB of extra storage space bringing the price up to $349.99. A model with 32GB of memory and no cellular connectivity is priced at $299.99, with Amazon presently also offering a special bundle which includes the Kindle Oasis, power adapter, and a first-party cover for the device and goes for $309.97, thus allowing you to save $20.
Adaptive front light sensor with a glare-free display is also part of the package here, as is a battery that Amazon claims will easily last for weeks and 12 LEDs illuminating your screen as needed. The Kindle Oasis is 159 x 141 x 8.3mm in size and weighs 194g, thus being relatively compact and portable, though it still features a battery bump and is actually 3.4mm thick above that lump. Just like the original Kindle Oasis, the “All-New” one boasts physical buttons for turning pages. The e-reader is available for purchase in Graphite and Aluminum Black color options and will start shipping to customers on October 31st, 19 days before Amazon‘s Kindle series celebrates its 10th anniversary.
