Google Pixel 2, XL Owners Report Poor Quality Recorded Audio

The latest reported issue relating to the Google Pixel 2 and 2 XL is the quality of the audio when recording video. A post dating back to October 22 popped up on the Pixel User Community from a user detailing that the sound quality “is very bad” when recording video. Since the initial posting, a number of others have joined the conversation echoing the same sentiment. With more starting to join the conversation on a daily basis. In addition, at least two Reddit threads have surfaced in the last couple of days pretty much suggesting the same thing – that there are issues with the quality of the audio produced when recording videos.

What is less clear is how prevalent the issue is at the moment and also what is causing the issue. One of the most common complaints is how tinny and/or high-pitched recorded audio comes across. Interestingly, some of the posts (both on Reddit and the Pixel User Community) seem to suggest that water sounds are in particular prone to being distorted when recorded. Although, again why that is the case remains to be seen. However, the most recent Reddit post does state that a support rep has confirmed that Google is aware of the issue and that an update is being prepared which will look to address the issue. Although no further information was provided on the cause of the problem, how the update will fix it, or when those experiencing the issue can expect the update to arrive. Which could mean that it is still an aspect being investigated and/or the update is still being ironed out.

For reference, this is not the first microphone-related issue to be noted with the Pixel 2 line as yesterday it was noted how there also seems to be an issue with the microphone in general. Unlike this issue which seems to be more focused on the recorded sound quality, the previous issue suggested that the phone was not quite picking up the mic in the first place. Examples given include the microphone not recognizing someone speaking when a call is ongoing (although worked fine when using speaker mode), or Assistant not ‘hearing’ someone. Ironically, that particular user did note how the microphone seems to work fine when recording video. Whether these different microphone-related issues are actually related or not is unclear, but the number of users now starting to report or confirm similar issues is rising steadily. As is of course, the number of users reporting other issues that have been attributed to the new Pixel 2 and 2 XL.
