Samsung today announced the introduction of a new product, the Samsung Connect Tag. As the name suggests, the key selling point here is that this is a tag which is also connected. Meaning it can be used as a way for to track anything, anywhere and everywhere. In terms of availability, Samsung has yet to provide full and frank details on this, and as such there is no current information on when it will become generally available, where it will be available, or how much it will be priced at when it does become available. With Samsung only currently revealing that it will first become available to buy in South Korea before becoming available in “select countries in the coming months.”
The tag itself uses Narrowband technology which Samsung not only notes is the first product to do so, but also further explains that this is a cellular communication designed for small data and low power usage, as well as a reliable connection. Which Samsung argues makes it an ideal tracking solution for just about anything. Even more so as the device is capable of tracking both indoors and outdoors due to its support for GPS, Wi-Fi-based positioning (WPS) and Cell ID. Although what is arguably even more appealing is the battery life on offer, with Samsung explaining the included 300 mAh battery will offer up to seven days of usage before needing to be charged again. This is a unit which is powered by Tizen although it is one which is designed to work with an Android app and on devices running Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) at a minimum.
Some of the examples Samsung provides as use cases for the new Connected Tag include its ability to be attached to a child’s bag for location information, or to a pet’s collar in case the pet goes missing, or simply to find the car in a busy parking lot. Adding to its fairly extensive feature list is an IP68 certification for dust and water-resistance, which among other things will prove even more useful with cases such as the pet monitoring and finding, as regardless of the environment the tag encounters it is designed to be durable enough to keep working. While these are just some examples, the message Samsung is trying to get across is due to its long-lasting battery, low-demanding technology, small sized body, and durable nature, the usage possibility are fairly endless.
