Google’s video calling app, Duo, has been in the news quite a bit this week. That’s due to the fact that it has gotten integration with some of Google’s native apps that you’ll find on the Pixel and Nexus devices like Dialer, Contacts and Messages. Now that this update is official and the APK is out, many have started tearing it apart to see what’s new. And it appears that Google is looking to add screen sharing within video calls in a future Duo update.
There’s a new line within the code for Duo that talks about starting or stopping screen sharing. And it also uses the Cast logo, so it could be known as “Casting” which is a bit true, as you would be casting your screen to someone else. It’s not fully baked yet, as there’s just a little bit of code found within the APK, but it shows that it is something that Google is working on right now. Obviously, this is a feature that would work pretty well with customer support, allowing Google to see your screen while you are on the phone with their support staff. This is actually something that Amazon already does with its Fire tablets that it sells. And it has proven to be pretty useful for its customers, and gets things fixed pretty quickly.
Screen sharing may or may not be coming to Duo. Google does routinely test out new features and decide to either remove them from the roadmap or push them back a bit to push out later on down the road. But Google does also decide to launch it pretty soon as well. So this is a feature that we could see coming to Duo in the near future, or down the road, or even not all. So don’t get your hopes up to high with this feature, but it would be a good one to add to Duo. Especially after all of the integration that Google added for Duo this week already. The latest update is available in the Play Store now, it’s v2.0, if you don’t have it already, you can grab it from there.
