Spotify has a bit of news on Google’s day, and it involves the Google Assistant. While Spotify has been available with the Google Assistant on the Google Home, basically since launch, the company has now announced that streaming music will be available on all Google Assistant devices, expanding beyond just the Google Home. Now this means that it will work on other products like the Google Home Mini and other speakers announced with Google Assistant, like those that Sony and HARMAN announced back at IFA. This works for both free and premium Spotify users as well.
What this will mean for Spotify users, is that they will be able to tell Google Assistant to play their favorite playlist on something like a Chromecast-enabled speaker, or ask Google Assistant to play a specific song on their smartphone. It’s not really a huge development, but it does make Spotify and Google Assistant integration just a bit tighter, which is definitely nice to see – especially for those that are both Spotify and Google users. Spotify did say that this will be rolling out to its platforms in the coming weeks, and there is no specific date for when this feature will be available. But it should be coming fairly soon, so Spotify users should be on the lookout.
With the Google Assistant, users are able to just shout at the assistant and have music being played. Which is already a pretty cool idea, especially since it streams music over WiFi instead of Bluetooth, like most speakers do currently. Spotify is one of the more popular music streaming services around, even though it is one of the few that can’t turn a profit. So having it gain more integration with the Google Assistant is definitely a good thing. Spotify is available for free, or you can upgrade to Premium for $9.99, which unlocks more features like ad-free listening and also allows you to store music offline, there is also a $14.99 family plan for up to 6 members. Spotify does also have video as well as podcasts included in its app, so it’s really a one-stop shop for all of your listening needs.
