HMD Global’s latest advertisement for the Nokia 8 promotes using Android Pay on roller skates, or at least wants to let you know that’s a possibility, so long as you have a friendly doughnut trailer with a contactless point of sale terminal in your vicinity. The ad released by the company earlier this week is short, energetic, and all kinds of wacky, being in line with the firm’s other recent attempts at teasing and promoting its new Android-powered offerings. Android Pay has been supported by the Nokia 8 since its launch in September, but it wasn’t until now that the Finnish company opted to highlight this NFC-enabled capability of its latest flagship. The ad that can be seen below aims to illustrate the relative ease of using Google’s mobile payments solution and is rather straightforward, much like most other promos released by HMD over the course of this year.
After purchasing the license to sell Nokia devices from Microsoft in late 2016, HMD opted to conduct a complete revival of the brand that found itself on the very fringe of obscurity under the leadership of the Windows Phone creator. The company hence oversaw Nokia’s first serious foray into the Android ecosystem, not counting the widely unsuccessful Nokia X series. In essence, HMD decided to have its new handsets go back to basics and offer a pure Android software experience coupled with solid specs at reasonable costs in every price range. The Nokia 2, 3, 5, 6, and 8 all adhere to those same principles and are believed to be set for significant commercial success, with recent estimates putting their combined sales at over 10 million in the first year of their global availability.
HMD still hasn’t talked specific numbers in terms of sales and isn’t obliged to do so at all since it’s a privately held company, though that approach may change in the near future should the firm achieve significant success on a worldwide level. Out of its existing devices, only the Nokia 7 mid-ranger has yet to be released globally, having launched in China last month, whereas a relatively bezel-less Nokia 9 is also said to be in the works and may be officially announced come early 2018.
