Google Project Fi customers or those who are thinking of switching can now get $100 back on the purchase of the Moto X4 Android One Edition, Pixel XL, or a member of the Pixel 2 family, via a bill credit on their first full month of service after purchase, and buying the Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL will also get you a free Google Home Mini. If you purchase one or more phones on a group plan, the group plan’s owner will see the credits. Single-subscriber accounts, meanwhile, are limited to only one service credit, even if purchasing multiple devices. The service credit is invalidated if you return the phone or cancel the service, and is not redeemable for cash. Thanks to Fi’s pricing structure, it’s entirely possible that your bill will come in under $100. Google did not explicitly state what will happen if that is the case, but it is to be assumed that the credit will roll onward to future bills since it cannot be redeemed for actual money. All of these deals only last until Thursday, November 30th.
The $100 bill credit is separate from the purchase of the devices in question, which still has to be either paid upfront or put into an arrangement and paid off over time. The Moto X4 Android One is the cheapest of the bunch at $399. The Pixel 2 is the next device up on the price ladder, coming in at $649 for the 64GB model or $749 for the 128GB one. The Pixel XL is next on the list, with a base price of $669 for 32GB of storage, or $769 for 128GB. Finally, the Pixel 2 XL rounds out the list as the most expensive of the bunch, costing $849 for a 64GB unit, or $949 for one with 128GB of internal flash memory.
The deal serves to invigorate interest in Project Fi, but even without the deals, its unique pricing structure and approach to coverage have gotten it considerable attention in a market dominated by four big players. It uses the networks of both T-Mobile and Sprint, which is why only certain phones that can support both and use Google’s specialized cellular coverage management software are allowed on the plan. As for pricing, you can sign up for only $20, then add $15 per user just for text and voice. Adding data can be done for $10 per GB in order to avoid surprises if you can predict your usage, and using less than you sign up for will net you credit. Using more than you signed up for won’t result in an overage charge, you’ll just pay the usual $10 per GB. This can be prorated by the dollar for every 100MB used rather than leaping up to the nearest GB, so using 200MB of extra data in a month, for example, will cost $2 on top of the $20 monthly base fee and any applicable device payments.
