Earlier this week on November 2nd, Samsung Electronics announced its final steps for completing its change in leadership, with seven Executive Vice Presidents now being prompted to Presidents for “exceptional contributions” and with the heads of the company’s three main divisions assuming additional roles associated with their new posts. Meanwhile, Oh-Hyung Kwon, Boo-Keun Yoon, and Jong-Kyun Shin will leave the Board of Directors as of March 2018, and although they will no longer be involved in Samsung Electronics’ daily operations, they will continue to provide their knowledge and insights to guide the current management team.
According to Samsung’s press release, the Device Solutions Division in North America saw the largest number of promotions this year, reflecting Tim Baxter outstanding performance. He was also responsible for “driving success across a broad range of consumer products” in the region and thus, Tim Baxter was promoted to Corporate President and will maintain his role as CEO of Samsung Electronics America. Meanwhile, Gyoyoung Jin, Head of Memory Business; Inyup Kang, Head of System LSI; and Eun Seung Jung, Head of Foundry, will all be promoted to the ranks of President and will maintain their current roles. Additionally, Jong-Hee Han who previously served as Executive Vice President and Head of R&D at Visual Display Business was promoted to the role of President and Head of the entire Visual Display department. Hee-Chan Roh, previously an Executive Vice President and CFO at Samsung Display was appointed as President and Chief Financial Officer, and Deuk-kyu Hwang, previously an Executive Vice President in the Semiconductor Business leading the Giheung-Hwaseong Complex, has been appointed as President and Head of Samsung China.
Samsung Electronics also gave additional roles to the heads of its three main divisions, with Kinam Kim, Head of DS Division now serving as CEO of Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, and HS Kim, Head of CE Division, becoming both Head of Digital Appliance Business and Head of Samsung Research. The current Head of IT & Mobile Communications Division – DJ Koh – will continue to lead the Mobile Communications Business. Lastly, the three former heads who will be leaving the Board of Directors in March 2018 will continue to lend their expertise but will not be involved in the company’s daily operations. As such, Oh-Hyung Kwon was recognized for making Samsung the world’s largest semiconductor company and has been named Chairman of Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology. Boo-Keun Yoon will now operate as Vice Chairman and will be responsible for Samsung’s external Corporate Relations, and Jong-Kyun Shin will nurture the company’s future leaders from his position as Vice Chairman.
