Dino Stack is the name of a new Android game that appeared on the Google Play Store this Thursday, seeking to differentiate itself in the sea of fierce indie competition by utilizing a somewhat unique premise – stacking dinosaurs. The block-stacking genre is hardly a novelty in the industry but Dino Stack still manages to own it by delivering tight controls and smooth gameplay centered around an unconventional premise. The end result of that effort is a mobile game suitable for people of all ages, though one that may not keep everyone’s attention for long, especially since it’s pretty challenging. Still, if you’re looking for a casual time-waster that’s easy to drop in and out of, Dino Stack is worth giving a go, especially since it’s free to download.
The game is primarily monetized with ads that can be removed with a single in-app purchase worth two bucks, though a secondary currency used for purchasing boosts and new characters can also be obtained for real money, even though doing so isn’t necessary for experiencing the game’s content in its entirety. Support for Google Play Games achievements and leaderboards is also part of the package, though cloud saves don’t appear to be. The goal of the game is to turn your dinosaur into a prehistorical giraffe by stacking as many blocks forming its neck as possible. Besides the traditional incentive of chasing high scores and the aforementioned achievements, players are also rewarded for successful stackings by being able to see a variety of new scenery as their dinosaur gets taller and earning in-game currency they can use to purchase new creatures.
Dino Stack needs to be granted access to write to the external memory of the device should the player want to move the game from the internal storage of their Android smartphone to its microSD card. The game also asks for a permission to make phone calls but doesn’t provide any reasoning for doing so. However, denying it that privilege doesn’t appear to break any functionalities. The title is already available on a global level and will be debuting on iOS in January, according to developer Dreamplay Games. Finally, Dino Stack is a surprisingly localized offering compared to many other low-budget indies, coming with support for 13 languages.
