It’s not every day that a software update brings about more than a few bug fixes and maybe some security updates, but the OxygenOS 4.7.4 update for the OnePlus 5T challenges that idea and brings some big changes to the camera side of things. OnePlus is specifically addressing concerns over the low-light performance that customers raised when they received the OnePlus 5T, not to mention early reviews based on launch software, and as such, OnePlus has tweaked the look of the software a bit and added in some new solutions that deal with enhancing details in poor lighting conditions.
The OnePlus 5T ships with a dual camera solution, similar to the OnePlus 5 that launched earlier this year, but this time around OnePlus specifically focused on getting better low light photography on the table. Utilizing a brand new Sony IMX 376K sensor for the secondary camera, which features 20-megapixel resolution and 1.0-micron size pixels, the low light photography capabilities of the OnePlus 5T pull in much better results than we saw with the OnePlus 5 earlier this year. This new sensor is able to combine pixels for better low light abilities, which is good since 1.0-micron size pixels are unbelievably tiny, and pale in comparison to the 1.4 and 1.55-micron size pixels that other OEMs have been using for the past few years.
This in addition to putting both the main 16-megapixel Sony IMX 398 sensor and the secondary sensor behind the same f/1.7 lens, and you can start to see how OnePlus has begun to pave the way for excellent low light photography. As with anything though, the software can make or break an experience, and there’s certainly no question that OnePlus’s redesign of the camera software on the 5T is looking much better than past efforts. In addition to this, OnePlus is still shipping the phone with portrait mode, enabled by the dual cameras on the back, and a sharp 16-megapixel Sony IMX 371 sensor on the front as well. There’s even a new soft flash for selfies that illuminates the screen an off-white color to help brighten up darker scenes. Is this the best camera we’ve seen from OnePlus yet?
