During a recent event, Samsung announced the restructuring of its R&D divisions by reorganizing the Software R&D center as well as the Digital Media & Communications center into a new entity called Samsung Research. The new branch will operate as an R&D division for Samsung’s Consumer Electronics business as well as its Mobile and IT divisions, and its main purpose will be to advance the development of the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI), all the while creating new business opportunities.
According to the Korean tech giant, Samsung Research will be spread across twenty-two R&D centers around the globe and will have a total of 20,000 employees working under its umbrella. The President and Head of Samsung Research, Hyun-suk Kim, discussed with some of the branch’s employees at the recent event and shared that starting today, Samsung Research will aim to realize the future dream by tech enthusiasts by driving the most advanced innovations in AI technologies. However, in order to do this, the first mission for Samsung Research will be to instill a development culture where every employee encourages one another to push the boundaries of creativity. It’s worth noting that Samsung has been working on restructuring its business and change its somewhat rigid and antiquated internal corporate culture for the past few years, and back in 2016 the company announced that it’s taking one of the biggest steps towards adopting a modern corporate culture similar to startup companies.
The creation of Samsung Research by combining its two main R&D branches is less about corporate culture and more about pushing the boundaries of AI and advanced technologies. With a new environment focused on promoting creativity across various tech fields, Samsung will likely be able to interconnect its various products and technologies into a more unified ecosystem, and every new research and development could show its potential benefits in more areas early on. According to the company, as AI advancements continue, Samsung’s driving aim will be the creation of a single robust yet flexible and expandable platform designed to optimally utilize AI technologies across different Samsung products and offer simplicity to its users.
