Some previously unannounced Nokia devices may have just been revealed via an APK teardown of Nokia’s dedicated camera application. In fact, no fewer than three new devices were found by users within the app’s code and only one of those had been previously rumored. That’s in addition to known devices listed, such as the Nokia 2, Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 7, and Nokia 8. The new devices are listed as the Nokia 4, Nokia 7 Plus, and Nokia 1, respectively. Unfortunately, there is no further information to be gleaned from the teardown. However, given HMD Global’s naming conventions for Nokia phones, it may at least be possible to determine where, in the smartphone price and specifications spectrum, the devices will fall. That could give some indication as to what users can ultimately expect if and when the handsets are finally announced.
Starting at the budget end of the spectrum, the HMD-built Nokia 1 is the only device listed to have previously been hinted at being in the works. That handset is expected to be the most affordable of Nokia’s devices and is rumored to be launching in March. Users shouldn’t expect too much from a device that is speculated to sale for just over $100 and to ship with only 1GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable internal storage. However, it has previously been said that the device will also run on Google’s Android Go platform, so it should perform admirably, regardless of its low-specs and cost. Moving past the Nokia 1, the APK teardown also shows a listing for a device dubbed the Nokia 4. Judging by typical naming conventions used by the company, the Nokia 4 should fall somewhere between the Nokia 3 and Nokia 5. In terms of specifications and cost, that equates a price point between $126 and $175. On the performance front, the Nokia 3 features a quad-core MediaTek SoC clocked at 1.3GHz. That’s backed up by 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Meanwhile, the Nokia 5 features an octa-core Snapdragon 430 SoC backed by 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. So the Nokia 4 should logically reside somewhere in between. The Nokia 7 Plus, on the other hand, will likely be an upgraded variation on the current Nokia 7. That handset features an octa-core Snapdragon 630 SoC, clocked at 1.8GHz and backed up by 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage. It also currently retails at around $400. It isn’t completely unreasonable to assume that the new Nokia 7 Plus would feature a slightly snappier processor – perhaps the Snapdragon 660 SoC – or that HMD would opt for slight bumps to other specs on the device. However, the company may just choose to provide a slightly larger screen, instead. In either case, the cost of the device will likely see a minor increase as well.
Meanwhile, it is important to remember that without an official announcement from HMD, all of the information included here is speculative. It may turn out that none of the new devices is actually planned for release anytime soon. Having said that, if the devices listed in the teardown are slated for release in the near future, they may just get a big reveal at the upcoming CES 2018 expo. While there’s no guarantee that will happen, it’s something that fans of Nokia devices will want to keep an eye out for during that event and after.
