Prisma Labs inc.’s renowned photo manipulation application Prisma has now surpassed a Google Play Store milestone to achieve 50 million downloads. For those who may not have heard of the application before, it’s also been awarded the Editor’s Choice designation and boasts a 4.2-star rating from over 788,000 reviews, as of this writing. Furthermore, the developers behind the tool have made sure that its compatible with devices running Android 4.1 Jellybean or newer. Taken in combination, that places Prisma among the most useful and popular photo effects tools on the Play Store and arguably certifies it as a must-download app for any avid photography fans on the Android platform.
As to the application itself, Prisma is designed to take user photos and turn them into works of art through the use of neural networks and artificial intelligence. It provides users with an array of stylization options to choose from, with the A.I. pulling inspiration to colorize, distort, and adjust an image based on works of well-known artists and modern styles. The changes are all made automatically once a user selects one of their photos and a style. Moreover, Prisma doesn’t just take advantage of Android’s APIs to make sharing finished images easy. It also features its own social features so that users can connect and share their artwork with others directly through the app. It should be said that while the application is free, some of those styles are tied to in-app purchases that range in cost from $0.99 to $18.99, with the higher cost associated with a yearly subscription. However, there are a ton of free options to choose from as well. However, Prisma also receives a decent level of support and frequent updates consistently make the whole experience better for everybody. Most recently, the app’s developers incorporated changes to fix bugs that were leading to crashes on some older versions of Android. That’s in addition to fixing bugs tied to the sending of reports on the app’s built-in feed posts and other stability improvements and optimizations.
There are, of course, plenty of other applications for Android that strive to accomplish what Prisma has. Most of those applications either don’t do what Prisma does or fall well short, thanks to Prisma’s distinct use of machine learning algorithms to accomplish its effects. So Prisma is definitely worth a look for those who are interested in expressing themselves with photographs.
