Meizu’s Senior Vice President, Jeffrey Yang, has just confirmed that the company did not ditch MediaTek, and that we can expect MediaTek-powered smartphones to be announced this year. Rumors have started popping up online suggesting that Meizu will no longer release MediaTek-powered smartphones, as the company is focusing more on Exynos and Snapdragon-powered gadgets, but it seems like that is not true, at all.
Meizu did mention last year that the company will release devices with chipsets from all three companies, Qualcomm, Samsung and MediaTek, and Mr. Yang only reiterated that via Weibo (Chinese social network). Meizu did introduce the Meizu M6S a couple of days ago, a mid-range phone which is fueled by the Exynos 7872, Samsung’s mid-range 64-bit hexa-core processor. The company is also planning to release its new flagship, the Meizu 15 Plus, in the Spring, and that phone is rumored to be fueled by either Samsung’s or Qualcomm’s flagship processor. We’re not seeing that many rumors regarding MediaTek-powered Meizu-branded smartphones, which is probably why such rumors started in the first place, but it seems like Meizu is planning to release some budget MediaTek-powered devices in 2018, though we don’t know when exactly.
Mr. Yang further clarified that Meizu will make processor choices based on need, primarily, but it will also consider the popularity of the chipset, it seems. Which more or less also suggests that its higher-end devices will opt for Snapdragon or Exynos chips, for sure, while the rest of them could use chips from either of the three aforementioned companies. Some rumors are even suggesting that Meizu may re-release the Meizu M6S with a MediaTek chip for some markets outside of China, but there’s still no confirmation regarding that, and it’s somewhat hard to believe that, but who knows, anything is possible. Mr. Yang did not mention any of the company’s upcoming smartphones in his Weibo post, so all we can do at this point is guess what will happen next, but Meizu’s fans are probably waiting for the Meizu 15 Plus to drop, that’s for sure, as that phone is rumored to have really thin bezels, and it will be quite powerful as well.
