OnePlus has halted the OTA rollout of the OxygenOS 5.0 update for the OnePlus 5. This is the version of the update which would have brought OnePlus 5 smartphones up to Android 8.0 (Oreo) and as such is an in-demand and major update. The announcement on the pulling of the OTA did not go into much detail as it came through in the form of an edit to the original rolling out announcement from late December. It is currently unclear when exactly the update stopped its outward journey (the edit seems to have been made within the last 24 hours) although the short edit did make it clear that the rolling out was stopped due to “a bug on Oxygen 5.0.”
For owners of the OnePlus 5 who are waiting on the update, the latest posting did state the company will not return to rolling out Android 8.0 in its current form (Oxygen OS 5.0) and instead will move to release an OTA update which will push the system up to OxygenOS 5.0.1. No specific mention on when this will happen was provided other than “soon.”
Interestingly, this seems to be an almost identical process to the updating of the OnePlus 3 and 3T to Android Oreo. As the 3 and 3T also originally started receiving OxygenOS 5.0 before having the update pulled, reportedly also due to a bug. Once again, the company decided to forgo OxygenOS 5.0 altogether and move 3 and 3T owners directly to the OxygenOS 5.0.1 update. It is unclear if the ‘bugs’ in the two OxygenOS 5.0 versions are the same, although when it comes to the OnePlus 5 specifically some users in the OnePlus Forums have been noting a battery-draining issue since updating. Although, other have not. So while there is the possibility that a battery issue may be behind the stopping of the update, it could have been for a different bug/issue. While OnePlus has not provided specifics on when the new update will start to make its way out, it was only with the last few days that the OxygenOS 5.0.1 update became available to owners of the OnePlus 3 and 3T, following the initial pulling of the original update at the start of December. If it follows a similar rolling out route, then it may take a few weeks before it becomes available to owners of the OnePlus 5.
