Pimax is unveiling the near-final version of its 8K VR headset at CES 2018 this week and giving attendees of the conference a chance to see the demo in action, and this is all in addition to preparing to unleash pre-orders for the headset so that interested consumers will be able to pick up a unit of their very own. The headset is officially called the V5, at least in its current state as an earlier version showed off at CES last year was called the Pimax 8K V1. That said it stands to reason that the final version could simply be called the Pimax 8K VR headset, or Pimax could end up calling it a different name when it’s ready for launch, or it could end up leaving the name as the Pimax 8k V5.
With the headset, consumers who pre-order (or purchase once it officially goes on sale), will get the two controllers with it alongside the trackers. Since the first version of the headset was shown off at CES 2017 Pimax has made plenty of improvements to that particular prototype over the course of the last year, which is now manifesting in this latest version including an improved and more ergonomic design for a more comfortable fit and feel. To make this possible Pimax has added the ability to replace the face cushion and detach earphones if the user would rather not wear headphones for the audio. The alloy portions of the headset are also now more lightweight and the result according to Pimax is a more comfortable fit for prolonged use, meaning users should be able to wear it for longer periods of time without feeling any discomfort.
The headset also now has positional tracking whereas it didn’t before, so this should be a big step forward for the device. Compatibility with the Valve tracking system is available too now as is support for Steam VR among other mainstream VR platforms, so there should be no lack of content available to enjoy with the headset. Specs-wise the Pimax 8K V5 headset has a 200-degree field of view and a screen resolution of 3,840 x 2,160, with a screen that uses a customized low persistence liquid display technology. Right now there is still no mention of an exact date for pre-orders and there’s still no word on a cost.
