Samsung’s foldable smartphone will not arrive in 2018, as some rumors have been suggesting, it will, instead, land next year. The President of Samsung Mobile, DJ Koh, confirmed this at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2018. DJ Koh actually said last year that the phone will arrive by the end of 2018, but it seems like its release has been postponed to sometime in 2019, and the reason for the delay lies in the phone’s UX. It seems like Samsung’s engineers were unable to provide the company with a good UX for the end user, so we’ll have to wait a bit more for the company to announce its first foldable smartphone.
Over the years, the company had filed for a number of patents that may be utilized in its foldable smartphone, though we’ll have to wait for next year in order to get more info, as DJ Koh did not talk more about the device, that’s pretty much all the info that he shared with the public. Having said that, ZTE did announce a foldable device last year, the ZTE Axon M, but Samsung’s upcoming foldable smartphone will probably differ from ZTE’s offering quite a bit. ZTE basically attached two smartphones one next to the other, and allowed consumers to use both of those displays as one, while retaining a rather large bezel between them. Samsung will, presumably, come up with a design which will allow you to bend the phone’s display, as flexible displays have been a thing for a while now. We know one thing for sure, the upcoming foldable smartphone will sport an OLED panel, and unfortunately, that is the only thing that we can say for sure right now, as we don’t have any info regarding the phone’s design.
The fact that UX is the problem for Samsung at the moment, chances are that it will differ from what’s being offered on the company’s current smartphones quite a bit, though the two offerings will probably have some similarities. Foldable smartphones could be the next big thing, and as things seem right now, Samsung could be the first to release a truly foldable handset, at least according to info that is currently available, things could change in the next year or so, of course.
