[UPDATE]Sprint Offering Free Year Of Unlimited To Switchers Again

Update [Jan 18th]: Sprint reached out to clarify its unlimited promotion wasn’t revived and is the same “limited-time” offer that’s been available since last June. Switchers from T-Mobile and AT&T were also always eligible to take advantage of the offer. The original story is as follows.

Sprint ran an aggressive promotion offering a free year of unlimited service to switchers in the summer of 2017, and now it’s reviving the deal, targeting Verizon customers. The summer deal mentioned Verizon specifically, but it extended the same courtesy to those switching over from other networks as well. The new promo addresses Verizon customers, but it’s also open to those switching over from AT&T, T-Mobile, or other carriers, as long as their device is eligible and unlocked. The deal offers Verizon switchers a free year of unlimited service, which includes HD video streaming, international roaming with text messaging and 2GB of data in more than 165 countries, and 10GB of high-speed data for hotspots.

Sprint touts that users who bring their Verizon phone over to its network can save as much as $900 in the first year, compared to Verizon Go Unlimited prices. A family of four can save more than $1,900 in the first year, Sprint further highlights. Since switchers can keep their own phone, they have to make sure that the device is compatible with Sprint’s network. Various smartphones from Samsung, Apple, Google, Motorola, and others are compatible with CDMA networks such as Sprint’s, but GSM-only devices will not work. Sprint allows prospective customers to check their phone’s eligibility before deciding whether to take advantage of the revived promotion. Switchers will have to get a Sprint SIM card and pay $30 for activation, but Sprint will reimburse the activation fee as a credit within two bills. At first, however, the fee will be charged on users’ first bill.

The new deal for switchers comes as Sprint is ending two of its main promotions – the “unlimited freedom” and the 50 percent off promotion. As a result, some Sprint customers who joined the network as part of those promotions will start seeing higher monthly bills, which might prompt some of them to seek other options. The free year of unlimited service for those who switch to Sprint now will end on January 31st, 2019. After that, customers will have to pay $60 per month for the first line, $40 per month for the second, and $30 per line for the next three.
