The PowerWatch X is a smartwatch that’s powered by your body heat, which sounds like it may be a revolutionary thing in the wearables industry but you might be surprised to know that the PowerWatch X is not the first device to implement such a feature. In fact, the original PowerWatch employed this same feature, and now Matrix is set to unleash the followup device which brings a new design and improved functionality with other new features in hopes that consumers will warm up to the idea of a smartwatch they don’t have to recharge by traditional means.
Sporting a rugged look and a fairly decent sized face the PowerWatch X can tell you the real-time power the watch has by way of a ring indicator that’s displayed around the edge of the watch face, with each little bar indicating a certain percentage of the power. Matrix also boasts that the always-on power meter helps to make the PowerWatch X the “most accurate” measurement for burnt calories on the market, so fitness enthusiasts will likely love that particular detail. The rugged exterior doesn’t just keep it protected from drops and dings, it’s also water-resistant up to 200 meters, so if it happens to fall in your drink, or in a puddle outside for whatever reason, it should be just fine.
Aside from the device charging via your body heat, when you take the watch off it goes into a sort of deep sleep mode and can stay idle for up to two years meaning you won’t have to worry about it draining. This is also because the watch stores your data in its memory the moment you take it off so that it goes right back to where it was when you put it on again, whether that’s the very next day or two weeks later. The PowerWatch X is compatible with both Android and iOS devices, and Matrix will be showing the watch off at CES this week, though there is no mentioned time frame for release. Matrix does however state that pre-orders for the watch are now available and it will cost consumers $249, so that’s about on par with other smartwatches.
