A startup company Atmos is looking to change the way people interact with their smart homes by taking the best of Google’s Home and Amazon’s Alexa platforms and adding even more intuitive functionality on top. Not only has the company now introduced a new touchscreen and voice-enabled display for controlling other IoT products. It also has at least a couple of smart products of its own which can be controlled via the interface, which can be viewed on its website via the button below. The general idea behind the company is that users should be able to interact with their smart home environment in a way that is much more intuitive than just voice commands from a central hub. Moreover, they shouldn’t be confined to just one central hub and those should integrate into the home automation environment seamlessly or require a user to swap in and out of multiple smartphone applications.
The main feature is, of course, the company’s touchscreen display – which appears to be either wall-mountable or usable from its placement on a stand. The device is compatible with a huge array of smart home products from lighting and door locks to video devices and speakers. That includes IoT technologies from Philips Hue, Belkin WeMo, Nest, Sonos, Spotify, and DirecTV, to list a few of the more popular brands. Better still, the company is actively pursuing coordination with even more companies to include them. In the meantime, Atmos’ device is not just a screen that connects to a central hub. It is the hub itself. Users can interact with it via voice or touch controls, with everything laid out in a single simplified U.I. rather than being forced to use multiple apps or control things individually. That means that even if a user has multiple different brands of smart lights or connected speakers, those can work together without having to control them one brand at a time. Full security systems will be enabled at a later date, as well. Meanwhile, using multiple Atmos devices, users can even set up a separate control hub for each room. With consideration for how the new device consolidates smart home controls so seamlessly, the convenience of having clearly separated controls for various sections of the home will almost certainly be more than worth the additional cost
Perhaps the best news is that Atmos plans to launch pre-orders for the device later this month for just $249. That’s a fairly reasonable price that’s right around the same cost for other smart home hubs that seem far less capable.
