It seems like Google may be canceling the ‘Chrome Home’ interface after all. Google Chrome is the most popular browser on Android, and chances are that most of you use it on a daily basis. That being said, in that browser, an address bar is placed at the very top of the screen, which makes it somewhat difficult to reach on larger phones, and most of today’s handsets are quite big these days. In order to tackle that issue, Google had started developing a new interface for the browser which would move the address bar to the bottom of the display. The company has been working on that interface for over a year now, and the latest info actually suggests that the change may never arrive to the stable version of Google Chrome, read on.
A few days ago, several bug reports were marked ‘WontFix’ in the Chromium bug tracker, and in addition to that, the following comment was added: “We are ending the current Chrome Home experiment and closing the corresponding Chrome Home bugs. Thanks for the feedback and support!”. Now, this comment does not exactly confirm that ‘Chrome Home’ will not move to the stable version of Android or that Google is canceling the project, as it could also mean that the company is done testing it, and that it is ready to move it to the stable version of Chrome. We will just have to wait and see what does this mean, but it’s worth noting that the Chrome Home option which brings the bottom address bar is now disabled in both Chrome Beta and Chrome Canary variants of the app. This does not exactly prove anything either, as it could be interpreted in a number of ways.
Having said that, there’s still a way for you to enable the bottom address bar, if you’d like, even if you’re using a stable version of Google Chrome browser on your Android smartphone. You can open up the app, and in the address bar type “chrome://flags”, which will enable a number of advanced options for the app. All you have to do at this point is find ‘Chrome Home’ in the list, and enable it. After that, kill the app, and you’ll have access to the bottom address bar in Google Chrome, though do keep in mind it may take about a minute for the UI to adjust itself.
