Instagram has announced that it’s mobile application is getting a new brand new Stories feature via an update that has been rolling out since February 1. The update will bring the application to version 30 and, presumably, brings other app optimizations and bug fixes, as well. However, the main feature of this particular update is going to be the ability to share more than just a quick video or audio update. Those options will, of course, still be available but this new update will allow users to share stylized text through what the company calls “Type mode.” It goes without saying that the update may not have hit every user yet, as updates can take some time to finish rolling out. In the meantime, anybody interested in checking for the update manually can hit the Google Play button below.
Accessing and using the feature is at least as simple as performing any other action in the Instagram application. Upon opening the in-app camera to post a new story, users will see a new option along the bottom, called Type. A tap on that option will open up the keyboard, allowing users to type anything that happens to be on their mind. From there, options are available for different fonts, colors, and other tweaks to the style of the text and users can also switch up the background with colors, photos, or a video. Right now there are already a ton of options to choose from and more will undoubtedly be added over time. Once shared, Type mode Stories will function just like a normal Stories share and disappear after 24 hours.
For those who may not be familiar with Instagram, this update follows a larger string of updates the company has implemented in order to try and recapture the interest of the masses. Most recently, a hashtag-following feature was added which makes exploring content a much more interesting and intuitive process on the social platform. This latest update may not seem like a big deal, but it helps to set Instagram further apart from other applications by giving users one more way to share and express themselves.
