LG Electronics filed to trademark the term “LG Boombox Speaker” earlier this month, with its latest intellectual property being believed to denote the feature of the upcoming successor to the G6 Android flagship released last year. The handset that’s said to be code-named “Judy” was already reported to be sporting dual stereo “boombox” speakers, with the newly uncovered trademark filings adding more credence to those rumors. The Seoul-based original equipment manufacturer submitted its original application to the United States Patent and Trademark Office on February 1 and presented the European Union Intellectual Property Office with the same filing four days later. Both applications are yet to be vetted and approved by the IP watchdogs but the timing of their submissions should provide the company with enough time to conclude the trademarking processes before June when the Judy is said to be launching.
The successor to the G6 won’t be advertised as the G7 but LG still hasn’t decided whether to do a partial or complete rebranding of the Android flagship lineup, according to recent reports. In case of the former, the firm would likely launch the device as the G9 so as to bring its version number in line with offerings from Samsung. The upcoming handset will reportedly be powered by the Snapdragon 845, Qualcomm’s latest high-end mobile chip expected to be found inside the vast majority of ultra-premium devices released over the course of this year. 4GB of RAM should also be part of the package, coupled with 64GB of internal flash memory expandable via a microSD card slot. Much like the G6, its successor is expected to boast IP68-certified resistance to water and dust particles, in addition to being designed in accordance with an unspecified military durability standard guaranteeing some degree of impact resistance.
While the V30 launched with a POLED panel, the G6 successor is said to be featuring a 6.1-inch MLCD+ module capable of achieving peak brightness of approximately 800 nits, industry insider Evan Blass claimed earlier this month. The screen of the smartphone should still be advertised as LG’s “Full Vision” display and feature an 18:9 (2:1) aspect ratio. A dual-camera setup with 16-megapixel sensors mounted behind f/1.6 lenses was also recently reported as being part of the upcoming Android flagship. The South Korean tech giant is attending MWC 2018 starting next week where it’s set to announce a new version of the LG V30 Plus with improved AI capabilities.
