Moleskine has launched a new smart pen bearing the name of Pen+ Ellipse, and unlike the company’s previous solution introduced in 2016 which was part of the Smart Writing Set and previously paired with Huawei Mate 10 Pro pre-orders, the new pen can save notes offline for later use even when it’s not connected to a smart device such as a smartphone or tablet. This offline work can then be synced with a connected device through a dedicated application which is available on three major platforms – Google Play, Apple App Store, and the Windows Store. The same app bearing the name of Moleskine Notes can be used for syncing sketches and writing in real time, but it’s important to note that the pen’s smart functionalities are enabled only when using the device with the company’s proprietary smart paper.
The Moleskine Pen+ Ellipse aims to bridge the gap between the analog and digital worlds by combining them into a single package. While solutions such as capacitive styluses are used directly in conjunction with displays capable of reading such input, the Pen+ Ellipse doesn’t require a display whatsoever. Instead, the smart pen has an ink tip that writes on paper just like a classic pen, but when coupled with the Moleskine Ncoded paper technology, this content can be transcribed to a connected smartphone or tablet in real time or otherwise. Half the magic actually happens thanks to the Ncoded paper, so for instance, a calendar event handwritten on a particular date listed within the proprietary Ncoded Paper Tablet notebook will be translated into an event on the corresponding date within the calendar application of a connected smartphone or tablet. Moleskine’s latest solution is priced at $179 excluding shipping costs, and the package contains the pen with one pen tip ink refill, a USB cable for recharging the smart pen, as well as a Volant XS Starter Journal which doesn’t seem to have the aforementioned Ncoded paper technology embedded within. So, in order to take advantage of its smart capabilities with connected devices, the pen will have to be paired with a Paper Tablet, which is currently available for purchase separately for the price of $29.95.
