HMD Global’s upcoming Nokia 7 Plus was recently spotted online in China in a series of slides detailing some of its specifications and signaling what might be an imminent market launch in the region. As expected from the previous encounter with the Nokia 7 Plus in the benchmarking tool Geekbench, the device seems to be on track to become HMD Global’s first Nokia-branded smartphone to adopt an 18:9 aspect ratio. And like the Nokia 7 and Nokia 6 (2018) before it, the upcoming model ditches the front-facing physical ‘home’ button in favor of a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.
As previously established, hardware-wise the Nokia 7 Plus is fairly similar to the Nokia 7 it’s supposed to succeed, though it does take advantage of several upgrades in certain areas. For starters, the Plus model carries a more powerful mid-range Snapdragon 660 chipset from Qualcomm as opposed to the Snapdragon 630, and as a result, the CPU is coupled with an Adreno 512 graphics chip instead of the Adreno 508. When previously spotted in Geekbench the device carried 4GB of RAM, but it’s worth reminding that the original Nokia 7 was launched in two memory configurations including 4GB and 6GB of RAM, so there is a possibility that the Nokia 7 Plus might follow the same strategy. Furthermore, the Nokia 7 Plus carries a larger 6-inch IPS LCD display as opposed to a 5.2-inch panel, and features a similar yet slightly higher pixel count of 2160 by 1080, leading to a taller 18:9 form factor.
The Nokia 7 Plus also appears to feature a dual camera setup on the back panel, comprised of a 12-megapixel and 13-megapixel shooter with Carl Zeiss optics. The front-facing sensor should clock in at a resolution of 16-megapixels, and lastly, the device should launch with Android Oreo out of the box sprinkled with minor UI modifications and additions. As yet there’s no official word regarding when the Nokia 7 Plus might hit the market, however, HMD Global is scheduled to hold its next product launch event on February 25 at the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, one day before this year’s Mobile World Congress begins. With that in mind, there is a strong possibility that the Nokia 7 Plus will be showcased on stage at the aforementioned event in less than a month from this writing.
