Press renders have surfaced for Samsung’s DeX Pad accessory, the device that will essentially replace the DeX Station that was launched alongside the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus last year. The new DeX Pad will work a little bit differently than the DeX Station, and will be sold alongside the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus that Samsung plans to announce at Mobile World Congress at the end of this month. Unlike the DeX Station, the new Pad will allow the phone to lay flat on its back instead of sitting nearly upright like the phone would if it were sitting on a wireless charging dock.
With the DeX Pad, there are a series of ports on the top edge of the accessory for plugging in external devices, with the USB Type-C plug at the other end for plugging the Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9 Plus into the pad. The reason for this design and Samsung’s decision for making the phone lay flat instead of sitting it upright is so that the phone display can be used as a touchpad or mouse when the Pad is in use, not too unlike the way Razer did with the Razer Phone and the Project Linda laptop dock.
In regards to the ports, there are two USB A ports for plugging in either a keyboard our mouse or both, as well as one USB Type-C port, and one HDMI out port for plugging in the monitor, while the USB C port looks to be for plugging the DeX Pad into a power source. The Pad also has a rubber piece that sits along the top edge for grip when so the phone is more securely in place. Initial rumors of the DeX Pad began showing up around December of 2017, with the trademark filing for the DeX Pad appearing in early January of this year. Though it’s early and this device hasn’t officially released which means Samsung hasn’t given out any official details on it, it’s possible that the DeX Pad will work with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus, and Galaxy Note 8, in addition to this year’s Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus, as all these devices utilize a USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer.
