The Xiaomi Mi 7 may debut with facial recognition and wireless charging onboard, according to a new report. The phone was expected to be announced at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018, but based on the previous report, Xiaomi has delayed its announcement. This shelving is probably because of a delay in procuring the new sensors for an advanced facial recognition, much like Apple’s Face ID, mentions the report. It goes on to add that animated emojis could also be a part of the upcoming Xiaomi flagship with the addition of its new hardware for facial recognition. Back in January, Xiaomi did confirm to bring wireless charging to its next flagship. Meanwhile, for the inclusion of wireless charging, the Mi 7 may feature a glass sandwich design with a metallic frame, the report claims.
In December 2017, Xiaomi was said to be working on its proprietary hardware for having facial recognition on the Mi 7. The company was reportedly working with a few OEMs, both Chinese and international, for the development of its own version of Face ID. Xiaomi has already confirmed that its upcoming flagship will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor. Based on the earlier leaks and rumors, the Mi 7 is expected to sport a 5.65-inch display with an FHD+ resolution of 2,160 by 1,080 pixels. The handset might get 8GB of RAM with its internal storage capacity of 128GB, a beefier 4,480mAh battery along with the said wireless charging feature, and will run Android 8.0 (Oreo) based MIUI 9 out of the box. The report also mentions about a probable dual-camera setup on the Mi 7 with its supposed starting price of 3,000 Yuan (~$473), which is yet to be confirmed by the company.
The Mi 7 was expected to be announced alongside the Mi MIX 2S at MWC 2018, but only the latter may be made official at the event. The Mi MIX 2S is another high-end smartphone from Xiaomi, that will succeed the Mi MIX 2, and will feature a nearly bezel-less display. It is also expected to feature the Snapdragon 845, making it the first Xiaomi phone to sport Qualcomm’s top-end chipset if the reports turn out to be true. Going by the leaked images of the Mi MIX 2S, the phone may not feature the above-mentioned Xiaomi’s proprietary hardware for facial recognition.
