Sonic & PAC-MAN Mobile Gaming Crossover Hits Android

Sonic and PAC-MAN are joining forces on Android devices and are now featured in each other’s games as part of a limited-time mobile crossover meant to commemorate the fifth anniversary of Sonic Dash, Bandai Namco and SEGA announced Wednesday. For the next 30 days, players of Sonic Dash and PAC-MAN will be able to experience entirely new levels and characters free of charge. Sonic Dash is now featuring both PAC-MAN and Ms. PAC-MAN as playable characters who can participate in one-week in-game events spanning races and a boss battle against Bash the Ghost. While the promotion itself is only running for a limited time, those who collect enough keys, bells, and fruits will be able to earn both of the new characters permanently, SEGA confirmed.

Sonic himself is making his way to the classic PAC-MAN game on Android, seeking to save his kidnapped friends by navigating through mazes and evading ghosts. The developers made a set of new maps for Sonic, whereas all of the game’s levels will temporarily be styled in the vein of the Green Hill Zone. Besides half a dozen new stages, PAC-MAN is now also offering various Sonic tournaments free of charge. As is the case with the unique content that now made its way to Sonic Dash, players who get themselves involved in the time-limited PAC-MAN event until March 20 are able to permanently unlock all of the new Sonic Maze content, Bandai Namco said. The newly announced gaming crossover is an industry first, at least as far as mobile games are concerned, and similar initiatives may follow in the future. The time-limited content for PAC-MAN and Sonic Dash is now rolling out to users in the form of an over-the-air update and is entirely free to experience.

The Sonic series was recently ennobled with the addition of a revised version of Sonic Runners Adventure published by Gameloft after the developer-publisher reworked the game as a premium title with an upfront price and no in-app purchases. Bandai Namco hasn’t iterated on PAC-MAN in recent times but may do so in the near future, especially as the 40th anniversary of the cult franchise is now approaching, with the original game debuting in Japan in mid-1980.
