Google’s push into the streaming market got a major bump yesterday when it was announced that YouTube TV is now available on select Roku models, as well as the Apple TV. The timing of the announcement comes shortly before the Super Bowl any may provide a boost in YouTube TV subscriptions, though the app itself has been set to be added to the platform for a while now. Roku has shipped millions of its products over the last few years and may prove to be a valuable partner to YouTube in its efforts to advertise its offerings to cord-cutters. In order to compete with services like Sling, PlayStation Vue, and DIRECTV NOW, Google must not only expand YouTube TV’s content library but also work on widening the number of its supported platforms, with Roku being a major player in the segment.
YouTube TV offers quite a bit of content for those looking to cut the cord. For just $35 per month, the streaming service contains a channel lineup that boasts over 40 networks which includes all the staples like FOX, ABC, NBC, and CBS. The service also caters to sports lovers with offerings from ESPN and Fox Sports, has popular channels like Disney, and offers some premium channels like Showtime for an additional fee, much like its rivals. The service also supports up to six user accounts per household with unlimited cloud DVR storage and is promoting that particular feature as one of its main selling points. What’s more, each individual account has its own DVR library to boot. In contrast, only three of the six supported accounts may be used for streaming simultaneously, though the limit still shouldn’t inhibit most households. YouTube TV is currently available in over 80 metropolitan markets with plans to expand further in the coming months.
YouTube TV will be available on most recent to semi-recent Roku Models. The Roku 2, Roku 3, Roku 4, Roku Premiere, Roku Premier Plus, Roku Streaming Stick and Streaming Stick Plus, Roku Ultra, and all Roku TV models have already been confirmed as being able to run the app. The service is currently available for installation from the Roku Channel Store which can be accessed by referring to the banner below.
