Google has jumped into International Women’s Day, which takes place on March 5, with the addition of a new editorial section to the Google Play Store. That’s according to a new post on the company’s official blog. As might be expected, the category is centered around the celebration of women across all forms of media that can be found on Android’s Play Store. That means that there will be prominent applications and games created by women or by teams led by women, as well as music, movies, and books that were either created by women or feature strong female leads. The internationally recognized holiday may only be here for one day, but Google will be running the promotion over the course of the next week. Of course, the company also took the opportunity to highlight the story of some of the women behind the media.
Google’s announcement centers around popular titles and software developed by women and for women, but that isn’t always the case. The company highlights apps made by women, including 80 Days, Zen Koi 2, Race for the Galaxy, Kami 2, Canva, and Period Tracker Clue. But it also wanted to highlight efforts to bring female lead characters to the forefront of gaming, movies, and books. So LEVEL-5 Inc.’s popular Layton’s Mystery Journey, ustwo games’s Monument Valley 2, Pomelo Games’s Once Upon a Tower, and Camouflaj, LLC’s République also get featured in their own section of the category. In terms of books, audiobooks, movies, and television series, the company lists hundreds of titles. it’s no surprise that A Wrinkle In Time, Brave, Wonder Woman, and Supergirl are highlighted titles in their respective categories.
Aside from all of that, the search giant went just a step further to create a YouTube video highlighting the work of female developers. The video -included below- and other content, according to Google, is meant to inspire women to become more active in app development and the arts. That’s accomplished by showing that it is not only possible for women to be highly successful when it comes to those fields of work but that women are some of the most successful in those industries. There’s a ton of good content there for anybody interested in checking it out via the Google Play button below.
