Goodix had introduced its new optical in-display fingerprint scanner last month, during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, and the company has just confirmed that the PORSCHE DESIGN Huawei Mate RS sports that fingerprint scanner. Huawei had announced three smartphones yesterday, two P20 devices, and the PORSCHE DESIGN Huawei Mate RS, whose announcement managed to surprise quite a few people. Having said that, that device features two fingerprint scanners, one on its back, and one under its display, which is quite odd, as it’s the first phone that comes with two fingerprint scanners.

In any case, the fingerprint scanner that is placed under the display of the PORSCHE DESIGN Huawei Mate RS is Goodix’s all-new optical in-display fingerprint sensor, even though the one on the back is also manufactured by the company, but that is a regular capacitive sensor. The Huawei P20 and P20 Pro both ship with Goodix’s fingerprint scanning solutions as well, both of those phones come with front-facing fingerprint scanner, but not under the display ones, they ship with regular, capacitive fingerprint scanner, just like the one that is included on the back of the PORSCHE DESIGN Huawei Mate RS. Now, as far as the company’s in-display fingerprint scanner is concerned, Goodix claims that it is the only fingerprint scanner in the market that supports both flexible and rigid OLED displays, and for those of you who are wondering, the PORSCHE DESIGN Huawei Mate RS comes with a flexible OLED panel.

In addition to announcing its new fingerprint scanner, Goodix also mentioned that it shipped over 350 million fingerprint scanners to date, and that it has been collaborating with Huawei for a long time now, as the Huawei P10, P10 Plus, Mate 10, MediaPad M5 tablets… and a number of other Huawei-branded devices sport Goodix’s fingerprint scanners. Goodix’s optical in-display fingerprint scanner is a direct competitor to Synaptics’ Clear ID fingerprint scanner, which is also an in-display fingerprint scanner, and is included in the Vivo X20 Plus UD. Chances are that we will see in-display fingerprint scanners included in more and more devices from this point on, the technology has advanced quite a bit, and even though there’s still room for improvements, chances are that many companies will use such fingerprint scanners in 2018, and even more in 2019.
