According to a new rumor, the OPPO R15 will ship with the MediaTek Helio P60 processor. The Helio P60 is a 64-bit octa-core processor, which was announced about a week ago by the company. This is a mid-range processor, and the company likes to say that this SoC is aimed at ‘new premium’ smartphones. If that term confuses you, then just imagine smartphones priced between $200 and $400, in other words, some of the more powerful mid-range handsets are expected to utilize this processor.
Having said that, the OPPO R-series smartphones usually use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SoCs from the Snapdragon 600-series, so this rumor does come as a surprise. Using one of MediaTek’s chips in the Snapdragon R15 and its R15 Plus sibling would be a change for OPPO, though we’re not sure how realistic that is. The Helio P60 consists out of a quad-core A73 cluster clocked at 2GHz, and a quad-core A53 cluster clocked at 2GHz. In addition to that. The Mali-G72 MP3 GPU is also included on this processor, and it’s here for graphics processing, of course. On top of that, the Helio P60 also comes with an AI Processing Unit (APU), and it takes advantage of MediaTek’s NeuroPilot technology in order to let smartphones utilize facial recognition, object and scene recognition, and so on. You can read more about that processor here, in case you’re interested.
As far as the OPPO R15 and R15 Plus are concerned, OPPO basically confirmed a couple of days ago that both phones will sport a notch at the top of the display. OPPO released a new teaser image, mentioning both devices, on its official Weibo (Chinese social network) account, showing off a render of a device which sports a notch at the top of the display. A ton of Chinese smartphone manufacturers are including notches on their smartphones, which is almost certainly iPhone X’s influence. It is still unknown when will the OPPO R15 and R15 Plus arrive, but considering that OPPO already started sharing official teasers, it is quite possible that we see both of them launched in the coming weeks, despite the fact their predecessors (the OPPO R11 and R11 Plus) launched back in June last year.
