Academy Award nominees Rachel Morrison and Dee Rees teamed up with a number of other filmmakers and celebrities on the latest commercial promoting the capabilities of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus, Samsung’s newest Android flagship series announced last weekend. The video that can be seen below stars multiple high-profile names from Hollywood and YouTube stars such as Akila Hughes, James Spooner, Taika Waititi, Ann Lupo, and Constance Wu, all of which are trying to give some advice to aspiring content creators seeking to leverage the imaging capabilities of the Galaxy S9 lineup.
The video is part of the global “Do What You Can’t” campaign seeking to promote Samsung’s newest high-end mobile offerings as the ultimate portable filmmaking tools that push the boundaries of mobile photography. Samsung has been partnering with celebrities to promote its consumer electronics for numerous years now, having also done so throughout 2017. The company’s latest Unpacked event that saw the official introduction of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus also featured a surprise appearance from Gavin Free and Daniel Charles Gruchy, British content creators better known as The Slow Mo Guys from the self-titled web series. The new devices are visually similar to their predecessors but come packed with a plethora of performance improvements and camera enhancements, including the ability to shoot 720p “super slow-motion” videos at 960 frames per second and support for 4K UHD recording.
Both the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus also debut new variable-aperture lenses capable of mechanically switching between f/1.5 and f/2.4 f-stops in order to make the most of low-light conditions while still prioritizing image sharpness in optimally lit environments. The Galaxy S9 Plus additionally improves on that formula with the addition of a secondary 12-megapixel camera mounted behind a telephoto lens which allows for 2x lossless zoom and allows for Live Focus, Samsung’s version of the Portrait Mode popularized by Apple and embraced by some of today’s most powerful Android flagships such as Google’s Pixel 2 lineup. The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus officially became available for pre-orders on Friday and will be released worldwide come March 16.
